From classroom to control room: EWEC shows UAE students what a career in clean energy actually looks like

Every year, World Youth Skills Day prompts the same conversation in a lot of UAE households: what should my child actually study if they want a stable, meaningful career in the industries the country is investing in most heavily? Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has used this year's observance, themed "Skills for a Shared Future", to lay out one clear answer, and the numbers behind it are worth UAE families' attention.

A workforce already reshaped by young talent

EWEC says young professionals now make up more than 30 per cent of its workforce, actively involved in developing and operating the UAE's energy and water infrastructure. That is not a symbolic statistic. It reflects a company that is, by its own account, treating early-career talent as core to how it delivers national infrastructure, not as an entry-level afterthought.

Dr Faisal Obaid, Chief Corporate Support Officer at EWEC, framed the investment in blunt terms. The UAE's energy transition, he said, requires not only advanced infrastructure but also skilled professionals who can manage the utilities sector of the future. At EWEC, he said, developing young talent is treated as a long-term investment, equipping them with technical expertise, AI capabilities and systems knowledge to help build a resilient and sustainable energy future for the country.

What the graduate programme actually involves

For UAE students and parents mapping out what a genuine STEM career pathway looks like in practice, EWEC's graduate programme is a useful concrete example. The two-year structured programme is built around specialised training in renewable energy integration, low-carbon water technologies, artificial intelligence, big data, systems modelling and innovation, alongside departmental rotations and direct exposure to senior leadership.

Participants also get access to established online learning platforms, including Udacity and Coursera, alongside EWEC's own internal Talent Hub. On the leadership side, the company runs its Empower and Inspire Leadership Programme, designed to strengthen decision-making, resilience and leadership skills among its early-career staff.

For a student currently choosing subjects or weighing university pathways, this is a useful template of what employers in the UAE's energy and water sector are actually looking for: technical depth in renewable energy and systems engineering, but paired deliberately with AI and data literacy and structured leadership development, not one or the other.

The wider pattern: women in engineering, too

EWEC's youth talent announcement follows a related one from the same company just a few weeks earlier, marking International Women in Engineering Day 2026 under the theme "Engineering Intelligence." That story is worth reading alongside this one, because together they describe the same underlying strategy from two different angles.

EWEC said women make up around a quarter of its total workforce, with one-third of those working in engineering and advanced technical roles, spanning renewable energy, water desalination, data science, system planning and grid management. Eng. Mahra AlKhaja, Senior Vice President of Data Management and AI at EWEC, said engineering expertise remains central to the company's future plans, and that through data management and artificial intelligence, the company can turn complex information into practical insights that support decision-making across Abu Dhabi's water and energy network.

Eng. Zainab AlHaddad, a Specialist Water System Optimisation Engineer at EWEC, described a role focused on ensuring Abu Dhabi's water network operates efficiently while supporting the integration of large-scale reverse osmosis desalination plants, work she described as directly contributing to securing the UAE's water supply.

Read together, the two announcements describe a workforce strategy built on two consistent principles: bring in talent early through structured, well-resourced graduate pathways, and make sure that talent pool is genuinely broad, not concentrated in one demographic.

Why this matters for UAE families

For parents of students with an interest in engineering, environmental science, data or systems-level thinking, EWEC's announcement is a useful real-world data point to bring into conversations about subject choices and university applications. The company is explicit that it wants graduates who combine technical specialism (renewable energy, water technology, systems engineering) with AI and data fluency, the same combination that keeps appearing across UAE education stories this year, from the Ministry of Education's own Project Nova AI initiative to the growing emphasis on AI literacy across UAE curricula.

It also reinforces a broader theme running through this year's UAE youth and skills stories: the country's major infrastructure and utility employers are not waiting for graduates to arrive fully formed. They are building structured, multi-year pathways, complete with online learning access, mentorship, leadership training and rotational exposure, to grow that talent themselves. For UAE students thinking about where a STEM education actually leads in practice, EWEC's graduate programme is a clear, current example of what that pathway can look like.
