Sedin brothers take on Grouse Grind challenge to raise money for Vancouver schools

Vancouver hockey legends Daniel and Henrik Sedin are swapping the ice for one of British Columbia's toughest climbs as they take on the Grouse Grind to raise money for students through the Adopt A School campaign.

The fundraising event supports schools across Metro Vancouver by helping provide essential resources for children facing financial hardship, including food programmes, classroom supplies, literacy initiatives and other student support services.

For families and educators, the event is another reminder of how community partnerships can help schools meet students' needs beyond the classroom.

Here is how the fundraiser works and why it continues to make a difference for schools across the region.

A friendly challenge for a meaningful cause

Known for spending nearly two decades playing side by side for the Vancouver Canucks, the Sedin twins are now competing against each other in a different setting.

The brothers will race up the Grouse Grind, the steep hiking trail on Vancouver's North Shore often referred to as "Mother Nature's Stairmaster", as part of an effort to encourage donations to the Adopt A School campaign.

The challenge combines friendly competition with fundraising, encouraging members of the public to support local schools while following the event.

Supporting students across Metro Vancouver

Money raised through the campaign will help 133 participating schools provide additional support for students who need it most.

Rather than distributing funds through a standard formula, each school identifies its own priorities based on the needs of its community.

Funding may be used for:

  • School meal programmes
  • Library books
  • Classroom supplies
  • Winter clothing
  • Student wellbeing initiatives
  • Literacy programmes
  • Emergency family assistance

This flexibility allows schools to respond directly to the challenges facing their students.

Why community fundraising matters

Schools today often provide much more than classroom education.

Many also support children through nutrition programmes, mental health initiatives, family assistance and access to learning resources.

Community fundraising campaigns such as Adopt A School help schools expand these services, particularly during periods of rising living costs when more families may require additional support.

Even relatively small donations can have a significant impact when combined across an entire community.

The Sedins' long history of giving back

Since retiring from professional hockey, Daniel and Henrik Sedin have remained active supporters of community initiatives across British Columbia.

Through the Sedin Family Foundation, the brothers have contributed to programmes that support children, youth development, education and health.

Their involvement in the Adopt A School fundraiser continues a long-standing commitment to helping young people succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

More than a fundraising event

Although the Grouse Grind challenge is designed to generate donations, it also raises awareness of the pressures many schools continue to face.

Educators increasingly rely on partnerships with charities, businesses and community organisations to complement public funding and provide additional opportunities for students.

Campaigns like Adopt A School demonstrate how collaboration between schools and the wider community can help create more equitable learning environments.

How families can get involved

Parents, local residents and businesses can support the campaign by making donations or helping raise awareness of the initiative.

Many schools also encourage families to participate in local fundraising activities throughout the year, strengthening the connection between schools and their communities.

Supporting these initiatives helps ensure students have access to the resources they need to learn, participate and thrive.

The wider context

The Vancouver Sun's Adopt A School campaign has become one of British Columbia's best-known education fundraising initiatives, helping thousands of students over many years.

This year's campaign continues to demonstrate the important role community partnerships play in supporting education beyond government funding alone.

By taking on the Grouse Grind, Daniel and Henrik Sedin are helping shine a spotlight on the challenges some students face while encouraging the community to invest in their future.

For Vancouver's schools, the event is about much more than reaching the top of a mountain. It is about ensuring every child has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their circumstances.
